Name: Patrick Bain
Spouse Name: Rachel
City: Phoenix
State: AZ
Children & ages: Maria - 5 (1997), Anna - 2 (1999), Rebecca - 7
weeks (2002)
Occupation: Engineer
Hobbies/Interests: My hobbies and interests are pretty much the same as
High School with a few additions. The main additions are listed above under
spouse and children. Since getting married 10 years ago, I've noticed a
steadily diminishing ability to pursue my own hobbies and interests. The
four girls in my family are NOT familiar with the concept of "Me" time as it
relates to their husband/daddy.
Some things that I have taken up recently include Wushu (Chinese Martial
Arts), poetry, and drawing. We started the Wushu class because my wife and
I decided we needed to exercise more and watch TV less. We were doing
pretty well until taking a baby break. The poetry is mostly just a
collection of rhymes and lyrics. I don't try to follow any classic form
(which you'll see in the example below.) As far as my drawing goes, it is
truly for my own entertainment. My goal (long term) is to write and
illustrate some children's stories.
Favorite high school memories:
It would be impossible
to limit my memories to high school since I grew up with most of you from
grade school on. I loved playing sports with all the guys whether it was on
the little league field, in someone's backyard, on the wrestling mat, and
especially in the LDS church gym. I remember lots of boyhood crushes where
I was too shy (translate immature) to do anything but admire from afar. I
don't remember hardly anything that happened while in class, but I have
vivid memories of hanging out with the guys eating blueberry pies and
scooter crunches in the cafeteria.
What have you been up to since high school?:
After leaving high school, I spent a lot time in school working on a BS and
MS from UMR, and a PhD from Kansas State. Most importantly, I met Rachel at
K-State, and liked her well enough to actually ask her out. Unfortunately
(or fortunately), she graduated and moved to Phoenix to work at Honeywell.
I didn't want to lose her to some Phoenician, so we got married and I
followed her out here. Later I went to work at Honeywell, too, where I have
been since.
We have been actively involved at the North Phoenix Baptist Church since
coming out here. We've been teaching 6th graders at church for several
years, and find that it is also a great place for our kids.
Words of wisdom:
Since I have known many
of you for a long time, I'd like to apologize for any ways that I may have
offended anyone. I distinctly remember being tongue-tied by my heel a few
times.
And here's a corny prayer for you:
I pray your memories never outnumber your dreams,
and your best friends are not like intermittent streams.
I pray you will let go of any pains in your past,
to hold on to a peace that will last.
Anything else significant you would like to share:
If I haven't tortured
you enough... here's a rhyme that I wrote for this occasion. It's not
really autobiographical, but it does express a sincere sentiment.
Day Dreams
I never graced the cover of a magazine,
don't recall being chauffeured in a limousine,
maybe one time on the way to the senior prom.
But I sure wasn't dating the homecoming queen.
You know I wasn't captain of the football team,
and I've been embarassed once or twice by my mom.
I wouldn't trade this life of mine for anything,
even though, like everyone else, I like to dream.
Sure, I'd like to be a star of the screen.
Still, it's pretty cool to be me.
I never won a fortune on "Millionaire".
I gained a little weight, and lost a lot of hair,
which I sure could have used in my bid for president.
Well, I lost by a hair (and fifty million votes),
but I had a slick brochure and some nifty quotes.
Just ask me about taxes, or the environment.
I wouldn't trade this life of mine for anything,
even though, like everyone else, I like to dream.
Sure, I'd like to be treated like a king.
Still, it's pretty cool to be me.
There's one thing I have that I will never forget.
I have tons of friends and a safety net.
I know my Lord will catch me when I fall.
With Jesus in my life I am like wet cement.
He pours me and molds me, then makes me permanent.
Jesus makes my life the best of all.
I wouldn't trade this life of mine for anything,
even though, like everyone else, I like to dream.
Life isn't always what it seems,
Jesus makes it cool to be me.
You may be thinking, you don't need a thing.
You're satisfied with life, and everything,
or maybe you think there must be something more.
Jesus' yoke is easy, his burden is light.
He'll come into your darkness with a brand new sight.
Look inside, He's knocking at your door.
I wouldn't trade this life of mine for anything,
even though, like everyone else, I like to dream.
I'm asking if you would like to go with me,
to a place that exceeds all your dreams.
I'm not saying you should trade your life for anything.
Salvation is a gift that is free.
The price was paid for you to be redeemed.
Eternal life is better than day dreams.

What have you been up to since high school?:
Lived in Columbia from 1982-1985 then moved back to Rolla. Met and married
my girls' father in 1985. He
was in the army and leaving for Germany for 2 1/2 years, of which I was
there for 1 1/2 years. When he got out of the Army, we moved to Rolla
(1988). I attended Metro Business College and worked part-time at Powell
Lumber Company. Danielle was born January 1989, just after I finished the
program at Metro Business College. Soon after that, I started working at
UMR. While working at UMR, I took classes part-time. Sam was born
September 1990. I separated from their dad in 1992. Had a near fatal car
accident in July 1992, the only lasting injury is nerve damage that somewhat
limits my right arm/hand. Started attending classes full-time at UMR through
Vocational Rehabilitation. Received a BS from Management Systems Department
at UMR in May 1996. Taught at Metro Business College (mostly computer
classes) from June 1996-October 1996 and at the beginning of November,
started working at UMR in the Computing and Information Services Office.
June 1999 met my husband-to-be, John Conley. We were married in November
2000. August 2001 started working on my Masters in a new degree program at
UMR, Information and Science Technology. We live in a house with plenty of
room for the kids, and their friends when they invite them over (John will
not soon forget me volunteering our house for Sam's cheerleading sqad
slumber party -- about 15 girls in 5th and 6th grade), and it's on about 10
acres just outside of town, with a good fishing pond, within 1/4 of a mile
where I grew up.

Favorite high school memories:
High School seems like another life. I have lots of fun memories of
cruising the strip, Braidlows parties, summer softball, rodeos, working on
the yearbook, working at the Ritz and at K-Mart, our Senior Trip to Lake of
the Ozarks and just hangin' out. It all seems like a big blur. I don't
really remember that much about actually being in High School. I must be
getting old and losing brain cells. Looking back, I am very thankful that
God protected me through all my poor choices made while drinking (driving
when I shouldn't have, swimming drunk, etc). I never considered myself an
alcoholic and still don't, but looking back we sure drank a lot! I think I
was in a huge hurry to "grow up" and do grown up things.
What have you been up to since high school?:
I went to SMSU for 4 years and graduated in May of 1986 with an Accounting
degree. I moved to Wichita, KS in July 1986 to Work as an accountant for
Koch Industries (a huge oil company based in Wichita). I intended to only
live in Kansas for a few years and then work as an accountant for an airline
or some other business that was more exciting than oil, in some other place
that was more exciting than Kansas. God had other plans for me.
I laid down my party shoes in 1988 when I realized that I needed the
forgiveness and grace of my loving savior, Jesus Christ. After I surrendered
my life to God, I realized that you can have just as much fun without
drinking and that Christians really are fun! God brought my wonderful
husband, Bruce into my life1989 and we married 9 months later. He is from
Wichita and works as a Financial Advisor for UBS Paine Webber. Since
relationships are everything in that kind of profession, it looks like I'm
here to stay.
Fortunately, I love Wichita and all the wonderful friends that I've met
here. It's not a very exciting place to visit, but a great place to raise
your family. I quit my job to stay home with my kids when my son was born. I
have a 15 year old stepdaughter, Annie, a 9 year old son, Josh, and a 6 year
old daughter, Caroline. I am a part time Creative Memories consultant, but
spend most of my time helping at my kids' schools, attending Bible studies
or just doing stuff around my house. (I hate shopping!)
Bruce's family has a house on Table Rock Lake that we go to several times a
summer. It has been a great joy to make family memories water-skiing and
tubing with my husband and kids. A few years ago we took a family vacation
to Colorado to go snow skiing. We are hooked! We've been every year since.
Next year my kids will probably pass me up in skiing ability. I've always
loved sports, but never had that do or die drive like the rest of my family.
Someone has to be the cautious one! We have taken a few other vacations to
Florida and Hawaii, but mostly just go to the lake or back to Rolla to see
my parents. I'm almost always in Rolla for Thanksgiving . . . so give me a
call if you're in town. That about wraps it up.
Words of wisdom:
: I know it sounds trite, but God really does love you and cares about each
one of you PERSONALLY! We are taught to try to do everything on our own,
but God can give you blessings even more abundantly than you can even
imagine. He doesn't want to make you miserable, but to give you the best
life possible. All you have to do is accept the gift! He created you! He
wants to spend eternity with you! I encourage and challenge you to get to
know God. Give Him your troubles and live your life to the absolute
fullest!
Anything else significant you would like to share:
I have recently realized that you have to be intentional about life. Things
don't just happen very often. You have to choose to make them happen. This
takes work and time and sometimes means that you have to choose to miss out
on good things to go for the best things! Hopefully at our next reunion (is
it 25 or 30?) I'll have a huge list of places I've been and things I've
done. We'll see!

What have you been up to since high school?:
We left Rolla right after our sophomore year and moved to Bartlesville OK, so I
missed out graduating with everyone. I went to The University of Oklahoma and
spent the next six years working on my undergraduate degree and a little to much
emphasis on racing(hence the six years it took to graduate). I got my
commission through AFROTC and proceded to Lubbock, TX to attend pilot training
at Reese AFB. I finished 4th in my class and was retained to instruct students
in the T-37 for about 3 1/2 years. I met my lovely wife while TDY to San
Antonio in the summer of 92 and we were married in November of 93. I was
assigned to transition to the Air Force's Special Operation's MH-53J Pave Low
helicopter after my stint as an instructor pilot. We went to Albuquerque NM for
a year of training, then I went to Osan AB Korea for a year on a remote tour
while my wife went back to San Antonio to live with her mother and have our
daughter. I got to come home for the delivery then saw her again 9 months later
when I got back to the states for good. I had the opportunity to travel all
over the Pacific Rim while in Korea, three weeks in Pataya Thailand, 2 weeks in
Kuala Lumpor Malaysia, and had the wonderful opportunity to spend Thankgiving
dinner 1995 with Craig and Pam Scott while deployed to Okinawa. I got back to
the states and was assigned to the 20th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt
Field, FL. I had the unique opportunity to work with some of the most amazing
units in the military, SEALS, Rangers, Green Beret, STS, and a few others I
can't mention along with participating in many exercises and a few operations
that, no kidding, I could tell you, but then have to kill you(I really loved the
black side of my job). I saw combat in Bosnia, and was heavily involved in the
special operations and combat search and rescue operations during the Kosovo
campaign a couple of years ago. We decided to separate from the military in
September of 2000 and pursue a career in the airline industry. We loved the
beaches here in

What have you been up to since high school?:
I attended Cornell University after high school, majoring in chemistry and
psychology. I opted for the psychology route and
attended graduate school at the University of Michigan. My wife (whom I met
sophomore year in college) and I were married
in 1987 in Ann Arbor, MI.
After hanging around (oops, I mean working hard) in graduate school for
seven and a half years, I finally earned a Ph.D. in
cognitive psychology in 1993 (as well as a Master's in statistics along the
way). We moved to Evanston so my wife could
attend a graduate program at Northwestern University and I did post-doctoral
work for about seven months in the Medical
Decision Making department at the University of Illinois at Chicago before
deciding once and for all that academia was not
the place for me.
I took a job as a statistician/data analyst at a small market
research/survey research company and worked there for two and a
half years before moving on to the research department of a publisher of
middle school and high school textbooks.
When our second daughter, Megan, was born in 1998, my wife and I had both
reduced our work hours and set up flexible
schedules so that we were able to watch the kids ourselves and we've been
doing that since. In late 1999, I decided I no
longer wanted to work for a company and since then have been self-employed
as an independent statistical consultant.
Because I now work at home (kind of troll-like in my basement office), I
pretty much have the role of a stay-at-home dad, and
that's been a pretty rewarding and interesting experience. In addition, our
eldest daughter, Lauren, has just finished first
grade and we have decided to homeschool the kids from here on out, so our
lives are about to get much more interesting.

Favorite high school memories:
My greatest memories all
have one thing in common--great friends: my best bud Laura Jane, Maria,
Doyle, Bart, Amy Jo, Mary, Jay, and Craig. Really, everyone in band was
like a huge family of friends.
Band and Color Guard definitely dominated my high school experience. Every
year we raised the bar and got bigger and better. Those 7AM practices with
the dew (or frost) so heavy on the ground that we’d leave the field soaked.
Thursday night practices under the lights. Countless other practices, some
so cold you couldn’t feel your fingers, some so hot you felt like you might
just disappear in a cloud of steam. The road trips to Washington and
Warrensburg every year. The big competition at Whitewater (and we’ll forget
Wilmot), Chicago. The X-mas parades down Pine Street. Friday night home
games with Pizza Inn afterwards. Homecoming light shows. Winter-guard
performing at the Hearnes Center (in those smashing pink satin pants). The
pride I felt when our band would line up 2X2 before a performance and
stretch on for 3 city blocks. All good stuff! (Huge thanks for the
dedication of Mr. Drummond and my mom, and their supporting cast of dad,
Dona Fay, and Mrs. Law.)
Eating doughnuts and laughin’ back and forth in the cafeteria before school
with Laura and Maria. Trig and physics classes. Mr. Priest, Mr. Arthur,
Mrs. Freese. Senior skip day at Lion’s Club where Mary introduced me to
Sangria. Dancing to such classics as “Freeze Frame” on the senior trip.
District and State Music contests. Driving the wagon to Gulf Shores with
Mary, Amy, and Laura after graduation, (Go USA, I haven’t had tomato juice
since!)
What have you been up to since high school?:
I attended UMR and graduated in ’87 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
During this time I also managed to find my life-long love, get married, and
give birth to our first son Robby. My husband, Rob, graduated with a
B.S.M.E. degree and was commissioned into the USAF. I worked at McDonnell
Aircraft Co. in St. Louis until I joined Rob in Phoenix, AZ for his AF pilot
training. In 1989, we settled in the St. Joseph, Mo. area where Rob flies
C-130s for the Missouri Air National Guard, and I worked in the Substation
Engineering department of a great little utility company. I’m proud to say
that Rob served in Operations Just Cause, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm.
In 1994, we had our 2nd child, Emily; and Rob became the most incredible
stay-at-home Dad. In 1996, Rob became a full-time instructor pilot for the
Mo. ANG, and I quit my job to stay home with the kids. Later that year we
had our third child, Michael. After living in a fairly crowded
neighborhood, in an old Victorian home, which was like living in a never
ending episode of “This Old House”, we moved out to the country. We now
enjoy a good measure of peace and serenity, (and a 40-mile round trip to the
grocery store.) We count ourselves truly blessed.
Words of wisdom:
We are so fortunate to

given so much for our freedom. It is this freedom which makes possible all
the incredibly diverse and successful life stories contained in this

the Lord. I’m actively involved with the ladies ministry of our church and
have made many wonderful friends here in California, and all across the
country.
Words of wisdom:
It’s not what you can get out of life, but what you can give to life…in
whatever circumstances you find yourself in.
Anything else significant you would like to share: We will be moving
again this summer. We are relocating to the Mississippi gulf coast. My
husband will be stationed at Stennis Space Center, which is on the western
border of Louisiana. We will probably settle in Slidell Louisiana. Hope to
make it to the reunion, but we will be right in the middle of moving.
