Favorite high school memories:
Senior week when a bunch of us stuck that dead cow on the High School steps, when myself, Willie, Robert, Mike, and Eric got busted by Mr. Rauls for  uh, well lets see, uh, "smoking" yeah thats what we were doing-smoking; and got a week off from school with make up homework. Also parties at K.C. Hall, Pat Henrys, and Dino's. Senior  Skip Day party at Lane Springs when Billy Sullivan found something he had "stashed" in Blossem Rock on the Blossem Rock Trail. Any one who has ever seen this rock will know what I mean. The interesting things that Billy's car trunk would produce, his driving on the Jr. High football field, and behind Lions Club Park-the "Vetnamese" shotgun, collecting pumpkins, road tripping to St. Louis and Springfield with Billy, Sigmond, Randy Huskey and Steve Skelton. And working at Hillcrest Big Star with my buds Mark Neal, Donzie Hance, and Mike Arnold-and our friends coming up at night and, well, "helping" us take "breaks" in the parking lot. Good times, good friends, old brain cells. Always having a place to go if there were no parties anywhere, like at Brennans apartment he shared with his older sister with Sat night MTV concerts & Uncle Cid(Joe Cool). Its funney that Roberts apt. building was shared with our counselor Mrs. Kirkman- once Robert woke up face down in his own puke in Mrs. Kirkmans doorway! Remember Fosters Bakery, Kingshighway Bums, Powells, Byingtons Station, movie theatres downtown, all the old store gone from downtown. Nobody wanted to leave Rolla any faster than me, but looking back it was a great place to grow up. I'm always suprised at the changes and the housing thats gone up in later years. When I was a kid we were very carefree and stress free, we'd ride bikes till it got dark, and run around neighborhoods playing, and our parents weren't worried about us turning up missing or on a milk carton.  We'd sled in the winters on our hill, summers at Oak Meadow, and life was good and safe. I knew people who left their houses unlocked for the local milk delivery, where our mail
What have you been up to since high school?:
Graduated from CMSU in 1986, had a short uneventfull career for the Rolla Public Schools (must be in the blood) Moved to Aurora Mo in 1989 and worked for 10 years in Quality Assurance, Environmental Compliance, and Purchasing for a Food ingredient manufacturer based in Sprinfield. Met Diann Hoffman five years ago and we've been living in sin for most of that. Diann is a RN at Cox South in Major ICU and Coronary Care Unit and has over 20 years experience. She's from Missouri but grew up mainly on the east coast, moved back here 6 years ago, built her house in Clever population 600. Its doubled since she moved in. Its quite rustic with our view all around of horses and their colts and cows with their new calves, geese on the pond, very laid back. I was   lucky to get to travel in work and leisure and once vacationed in Phoenix-Tempe at Randy Huskeys swamp cooler next to Sun Devil Staduim. Where we enjoyed a Tesla concert from next door and some of Dino's finest. We roadtripped to L.A. and Hollyweird-had agreat desert cruise through Palm Springs to Beverly Hills. Did the normal "tourista" things -Hollyweird walk of fame, the Chinese theatre, Venice Beach, Chateau Marmont, Paramount Studios and a taping of Bob Newharts show for CBS.One memorable highlight was my first Ultra light flight captured on film, and that everywhere we went-when people heard me speak they kept asking if I was from Texas or down south!  One good thing about the company I used to work for was some of the travel and educational oppurtunities. I feel lucky that I've got to see so much of the Us and Europe and have some interesting stories. One story will show that you can take the boy out of the small town but you can't take the small town out of the boy. Once I had a 3 day conference in Chicago and my hotel was right downtown on Michigan and Wacker Sts. The Chicago address for Everything. Anyway as I entered my very nice hotel, the scene inside looked like something from a Woody Allen movie except that makes me Woody Allen! This hotel happened

I'd like to give special thanks to both Mary French and Greg Peterson for paying their respects to my brother and my family. At the time I was really  unable to express how much this meant to me. Like alot of you, the worst thing about getting older is losing family and friends, and I'm no exception. My dad Stan died in 1990 after playing both golf and then tennis, coming home and playing with his grandkids, posed for some pictures, then died right there in front of everybody, everybody but me that is-I wasn't there yet. I miss him and think of him often. Probably the biggest thing to  happen to me was on October 17, 1999 when my best friend and older brother Dennis Darr RHS Class 0f 77, age 40 died suddenly of a heart attack at home leaving behind his wife Kris, Christopher age 2, and Emily 10 years old. Not a single day goes by without me thinking of him, what a loss to us. The two funerals held in Springfield and Rolla were quite something, talk about your reunions. We have lots of family members, and between all our old teachers, neighbors, friends, and local business people who attended, even the sanctuary at the First Baptist Church was not big enough. The first people I ran into at the Rolla service were Coaches Ravenscraft and Rust. Those two helped lighten things up a little on this very somber occasion, but reality soon set in. As did all the normal human emotions - shock, grief, anger, and depression. It was just unreal with all of Denny's classmates, his old Bulldog Basketball teammates, Coach Read, Mr. Lee, Dr. Thessing, Larry Swinford from Dr. Falkenhains, and so many, many more, plus flowers from some of you and other RHS Alumni. Thank you, and you know who you are, we really appreciated this outpouring. One of my all time favorite memories of my brother is when we went to Europe to visit my oldest brother David(RHS Class if 75) and his family at his residence in the French Alps above Grenoble in the tiny village of Caix' en Chartreuse' France. We went to Brussels Begium, stayed with Scott Sumner

What have you been up to since high school? :
After high school I attended UMR for a couple of years then traveled to SMSU. I met Diane at the Baptist Student Union in Springfield and we were married a few months before I graduated. I got a job back in Rolla at the U.S. Geological Survey where I continue to work in mapping application research and system design. We have two great children, Adam and Abigail. Adam and I enjoy singing, golfing and playing baseball together. Abigail has me pretty well wrapped around her little finger! I have continued to sing and play music. I am 1/3 of the southern gospel group, The Heritage Boys (www.theheritageboys.com ). We have been singing together since 1990 and have enjoyed traveling throughout Missouri singing the Good News!

Occupation:
Associate Professor of Biostatistics, Univ. of Iowa
Hobbies/Interests:
Church activities, cycling, basketball, racquetball, fishing (occasionally), and trying to keep up with my kids with their activities (soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, ice skating, piano, flute, trombone, children's museum, birthday parties, etc.)
Favorite high school memories:
Because I moved to Rolla the day before I started kindergarten, it is hard to separate my high school memories from my memories of Rolla in general.  I was fortunate to be associated with so many good friends, acquaintances, and teachers.  I remember playing basketball at the church gym, sometimes as late as midnight.  I had lots of fun on the basketball and tennis teams, and the math and science competitions were great, too.  Other great memories were Lane Springs, Meramec Springs, float trips on the Current River, Six Flags, dances, our senior trip, and conversations with my closest friends.
What have you been up to since high school?:
A year into college, I took 18 months off to serve a mission for my church in Haiti.  At that point, I still had plans to become a physician, but after taking some classes in statistics in the mid-1980's, I decided to become involved in medicine through the research side of things.  I finished my B.S. degree in statistics at Brigham Young University in 1987, about the same time that I got married to Lori Stephenson from Modesto, California.  (By coincidence, Lori's brother is married to Jim Mitchell's sister, who also graduated from Rolla, so Jim and I are uncles to the same set of kids.)
From 1987 to 1991, Lori and I (and eventually 2 kids) lived in Boston while I got my doctoral degree from Harvard in biostatistics.  We loved living in Boston, and we saw quite a bit of the northeast while were there.  We moved to Iowa in 1991, and I do a combination of teaching and medical research here (we had also considered a job at the Univ. of California-San Francisco, to be close to Lori's family, but the position and the affordability of housing were better in Iowa City).
We love it here.  In 2000-01, we spent the school year in Utah, but we were glad to get back to the schools, people, and green surroundings of Iowa.  We do like to travel as a family, and we have visited 37 states together (including a drive to Alaska last summer).  Iowa City is a bit colder in the winter than Rolla (although we've had several mild winters recently), but that's about the only drawback of living here.  We have remained active in our church, and I recently have been serving as a volunteer (tour leader and security guard) at the open house for our church's temple in Nauvoo, Illinois.

High School Memories of Rolla are pretty slim.  As some of you may remember I was in and out of town at that time. One particular memory I do have might not be the best to post on a website, it had something to do with For Sale signs, TP, and a out house, anyone else remember that??
I do have allot of  grade school memories of  Truman Elementary School and Open Education. We did have some great times there. I try to explain to my boys now what it was like being in an experimental education program, I'm not quite sure how we survived that one and actually learned anything.
Although from the looks of those of you on this web page that were involved in that program, it sure did make us think outside the box.

What have you been up to since high school?:
So do I get my own page for this?? Let’s see if I can even remember that far back.

Where to began?  A couple months after high school, I went to Lincoln NE, where I attended a private college.  After a year of that, I joined the United States Marine Corps (thought I’d make a deal with Uncle Sam, he’d pay for my travel and college, and I would serve my country).  Well that relationship lasted about as long as most others had at that point in my life.  After 4 months and one leg injury later, I was on my way back to MO.  It seems that to be a Marine, one must be able to run, (which never made sense to me, as I always thought Marines stood firm and fought). Four months later, after re-planning my future and setting new goals, by accident one night, in looking for my sister at a local hang out in St. James, I found my true love. So much for the plans I had made (non of which included marriage).  Three weeks later just before leaving for Marine Corps boot camp, he proposed.  We were married 12 weeks later upon his return from San Diego. (By the way he informed me that the Army stands firm and fights in the defense, and Marines charge into battle and advance.) Shortly after the wedding we moved to El Toro, CA where we lived in Laguna Beach for one and a half years.  While there I worked in the office of a little dime store called Sprouse Rietz. Then came the big news, “he was being sent to Okinawa ALONE!”  I was going to have our first baby, so I returned to MO for an extended visit with my parents awaiting the arrival of our son Nicholas, while he traveled across the world.  What a long year apart that was.  He missed all the excitement.  Once our year was up, we were off to Jacksonville, NC (the armpit of the US as I refer to it). During our four years there, our second son Matthew was born, and at age 4 months, watched Daddy fly off to the Middle East to fight in Desert Storm. Nicholas loved having a baby brother, and was lots of help while Daddy was away. I passed away some of my time working in the Cash Office and also as Training Coordinator for Wal-Mart.  Shortly after Mark returned from the frontlines of the conflict, we were moved to New Orleans, LA.  I was excited about this move, since I had always wanted to visit there.  We spent a few months actually living in New Orleans, until we decided it was a much nicer place to visit than to live, so we moved out of the city a bit to Slidell where we stayed for almost four years.  We loved it here and didn’t want to leave, in fact we’re hoping to go back someday.  I got involved in the schools and the PTA, made a couple of really good friends that I still keep in touch with. This was definitely our first home away from home. But as usual, Uncle Sam has his own agenda and we were sent for a three year tour to Okinawa, Japan.  I was totally freaked out when we first arrived.  Talk about your classic culture shock!  But, after a couple months I was back on my feet again and so involved I felt my head spinning.  Once again I got involved in the PTA and in no time found myself sitting on the State Board of Directors to eventually be elected State PTA President, which then gave me a seat on the National PTA Board of Directors. This caused a great amount of travel on my part (about 7 trips a year to the US, plus the travel between Korea, mainland Japan, Guam and Okinawa). All this travel did award me new friendships, which I will always treasure.  In my spare time I was also Substitute teaching. The boys got involved in everything from Soccer, to T-Ball and then to Roller Hockey. Our first year there I was certified to Scuba Dive, which had been a life long dream of mine. Then out of desperation for a dive partner, I gave Mark a Scuba class for his birthday, he was not thrilled by any means, but after his first dive, was hooked for life.  Our three years then became six years.  We loved Okinawa.  We became great friends with some of the locals there, who took us to explore many parts of the Island that most Americans never see.  We participated in local events and even learned some of the traditional dances and arts.   I must say out of all the experiences I’ve had in life, this one has caused the most personal growth.  I see the world through much different eyes now.  I think my children do as well.  We spent some wonderful family togetherness time here and learned to appreciate in each other greatly.  Shortly before our move back to the US our oldest son got his scuba certification, so he could join Mark and I in that underwater world, a most awesome world I might add.  When the day came that we had to leave our beautiful tropical island home, all our hearts were saddened.

Currently we are living in Suffolk, VA.  We’ve been here for about a year.  I work for the City of Suffolk Parks and Recreation. Nicholas started high school this year and Matthew JR High, I still can’t believe I’m old enough to have children in JR and High School!  When we went for orientation, I felt like I should be the one going to class, not them. Nick’s friends, say I’m the coolest Mom though, so I guess that should count for something.

What have you been up to since high school?:
The first few years after high school seem a blur, probably because the state I was in most of the time.  I joined the Army and was stationed in Texas for a couple of years, and then moved back to Rolla.  After a while, I landed a job at Ft. Wood, where I met my husband Arthur.  That was a little over 13 years ago, and since then we have moved to lots of different places like Korea, Germany, Colorado, and Virginia, plus, we have 2 beautiful children!!   We are currently living at Virginia Beach, Virginia, where my husband is attending Regent University to obtain his Master’s in Divinity.  He’s also the pastor of our church, Virginia Beach Vineyard Christian Fellowship.  It’s really cool what God will do if we give our lives to Him!!  He redeems it all!  Hallelujah!!
