What have you been up to since high school?:
Hi, Everybody!  In 1983, I married Alex, my sweet teddy-bear-of-a-Christian-guy after he graduated from UMR with Math and Computer Engineering degrees.  Alex's job with McDonnell-Douglas, now Boeing, brought us to the St. Louis area.  After living in an apartment in Ferguson for two years, we moved to our first and only home in Florissant.  In January of 1986, I graduated with honors from UMSL with an Elementary Ed. degree, joining the ranks of teachers on both sides of my family and also many of my classmates. We've been blessed with three precious girls, whom we have taught all along in our own "One-Room Schoolhouse." (It has been great to see that so many of our classmates have been led to home school their children.  Wow!)  Life at the Melchers' is centered around family, faith, friends, keeping up with the girls' activities in music, sports, etc. and making sure they care for their cat, hamster, fish, and cockatiel.

Favorite high school memories:
High School was great!  I loved hanging out with my friends.  Crusin the strip every weekend.  I had lots of fun playing sports, marching in the band, and being in the flag corp.
What have you been up to since high school?:
I went to UMR and Drury college.  Gratuated with a BS in Elementary Ed. and Psychology.  I completed a Master's in 1998. Met and married my husband in 1989.  We have 2 wonderful children who dominate our lives.  While I coach our daughter's activities, my husband coaches our son's.  We live right here in good ole Rolla, which I'm proud to say is a great place to raise our kids.  I've taught 3&4 grade at Truman, my old elementary school, with some RHS friends (Lana Williams-Croft, Colleen Rolufs-Evans, and John Edgar) for the past 13 yrs.
Besides teaching at an elementary school, I presently work for the state of Missouri teaching other teachers how to teach hands-on science.
I tried my hand at sponsoring the RHS Color Guard for two years and worked my but off.  Too much stress for me.  Gave that job up to someone who had more time than I did.
Since my husband and I both teacher, we are off in the summer.  We love to spend our summer vacation time in Colorado mountains camping and at Lake Norfork with friends.

Words of  wisdom:
Live your life for Jesus Christ.  Love your children, they are a precious gift from God.

Any time spent home with family is great. Introducing the boys to the outdoors kinds of things Dad liked to do when he was growing up (hiking, fishing, camping)but it's a lot harder to do this living in Chicago than it was in Rolla!
Favorite high school memories:
Boy, it's embarassing how little I really remember about Rolla High--I remember having a blast with the gang as we fished, rock-climbed, camped and hung out from Bennett Springs to Meremac Springs, Lane Springs (lots of springs around Missouri) Devil's Backbone, etc. Worked way too many hours at Johnny's Smoke Stak but it was okay.
What have you been up to since high school?:
Went to Mizzou four years, then spent four years in North Carolina and four more in Tennessee in medical training and getting a pseudo-southern drawl. Came to our 10 year RHS reunion and-can you believe it-started dating Susan Konop, who I barely even knew in high school.  We got married two years later, moved to Los Angeles for three years then Chicago five years ago. Susan's section has pictures of the kids. It's been a busy, sometimes hectic blur, but I wouldn't change a thing. Okay, maybe I'd have spent more time keeping up with friends.  And keeping in shape.
Words of  wisdom:
Look out for those high school reunions (see above)
Anything else significant you would like to share:
Raising our boys in Chicago has really made us realize how lucky we were to grow up in Rolla.

Favorite high school memories:
Of course hanging out with friends in those carefree times.
What have you been up to since high school?:
I attended UMR and got a BS degree in aerospace engineering.  I then started a masters program (in AE) and after a year got burned out and took a year off to do some traveling and just plain goofing off.  Pressured to get back into the “real world” I hit the books again and finished the degree in 89.  I really lucked out with the timing and was able to hire on at the NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center during one of the few times they have lifted the standing hiring freeze. So it was off to Huntsville Alabama to work on programs ranging from the space shuttle to futuristic propulsion concepts.  I met my future wife Susan at a technical conference (she was an engineer working for what was Rockwell in California), and after a long distance relationship we married in 93.  We now have three wonderful children and they keep us both very busy.  Susan is now trying her hand at home schooling and so far everything is going very well.  I just can’t believe how much time has passed and how easy it is to lose contact with people.  It just seems like the other day we were doing our 10th reunion.  It will be good to see everyone again.
Words of  wisdom:
Don’t procrastinate…look where it’s gotten me!  I meant to get this thing off a long time ago and it’s less than a week until the reunion!

rubbing SPF 15 all over Ed Beechner (he burns easily)
hanging with my family.  I've gotten into carpentry.  A fixer upper was all we could afford.  I've been known to read a book or two.  Play 18 every now and then.  A nice stroll on the beach isn't bad, it's just 29 blocks away.  I'm also getting into this email thing so please write, I will write back, it may take a while but I will write back.
Favorite high school memories:
Somehow I remember alot of Rolla High, I can't say the same about college.  I loved hanging in the lobby before school, rubbing SPF 15 on Ed Beechner, (he burns easily).  Many, many  trips to Bob Ballenger's office, always changing the discussion to fishing.  Acting in the school plays, getting to work with John Woodfin.  But one of my favorite memories was not witnessed by many, just one classroom.  It was my junior year, first period,  Mrs. Freise's (sp?) geometry class.  I sat up front on the left and Eric Matthews sat up front on the right.  Eric decided to hide in Rita's coat closet for the whole class.  She took role, counted Eric absent and went on teaching class.  About 3/4 of the way  through class, we'd all forgotten he was even in the closet.  Eric starts chanting "Riiiiittttaaaaa, Rrriiiiitttttaaaa" She goes to the closet opens it up, Eric jumps out, poor Rita spotted, the class fell out.  Thanks Squatty, for the great memory.  Actually there were a lot of great memories from Rolla High....thank you all.
What have you been up to since high school?:
This is a pretty personal question.  I spent 5 years at SMSU majoring in Theatre.  I then followed my SPF buddy, Ed Beechner (have I mentioned he burns easily?) to the Burt Reynolds Institute for Theatre Training where I spent a year's apprenticeship.  I even went to Burt and Loni's Wedding reception.  It was there where I also met my wife, Dorie, during the King and I.  We didn't get married then but we did have a good time (wink wink).  It was also in Florida where I bought my VW Van, Vinnie. From Florida I went to California for 9 blurry months then headed to New York City.  Where I spent ten years.  I worked at Carnegie Hall, I did a few off broadway plays, some TV.  It was in 93 when I married Dorie, (in San Diego).  It  was in 97 when I sold my van and had our first daughter.  With each passing a new window opens.  We didn't want to raise Dylan in New York so we went westward.  We have lots of family, in-laws, on the west coast.  I started working in TV, the production side.  I worked on Mad TV, The X Show,  The Best Damn Sports Show Period and finally coming to rest at The Christopher Lowell Show (the gay Martha Stewart on the Discovery Channel)  It is perfect.  A little carpentry, a little painting and when we aren't in production, I'm in the corportate offices.  So that's me in a novella...
Words of  wisdom:
If you get it, see a doctor and get rid of it.  Also try to see christmas through the eyes of a child.

Ed Beechner burns easily.  We are so looking forward to this summer.  Thanks Kenny and thanks Martha.  82 Rules!

I attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and have a BSED in early childhood and elementary education.  I was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.  The summer following graduation, I met Mike Davis who went to UMR and we were married 2 years later and moved to O’Fallon, IL.  I taught for 10 years, 6 years Junior High and 4 years 4th grade.  Natalie was born in 1998.  When she was 3, we moved from O’Fallon, IL to Flower Mound, TX.  Mike was transferred here and now works for Genuity.  Matthew was born in December, our first year here and I have been home with the kids since our move to Texas.  I miss teaching but truly love where I am right now.  Before kids we traveled off and on for 5 years to see beaches and had the opportunity to scuba dive.  Now we love exploring Texas.
Words of  wisdom:
A close friend of mine here in Dallas, Texas shared something she read . . . “High school friends and good acquaintances are among the most important because they keep you grounded and shared in very important growing years.”
Anything else significant you would like to share: Looking back, my high school experience was great because of the people and the town of Rolla.  It was a great place to grow up and I wish I were in touch with everyone much more.

Favorite high school memories:

What have you been up to since high school?:
After graduating from Rolla High; I went to work at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Started out as a Nurse Assistant for about 3 years. Became an Activities Coordinator for about 2 years after. Took an interest in
transferring into Physical Therapy as a tecnician for about 1 1/2 years. I liked the Medical profession. Just didn't really decide on a real career choice. While working full time; I went to UMR part time and took some Computer classes in the evening.  I know Engineering wasn't for me.  I was also very active with the Newman Center(Catholic Student center).  There I started to be more open with myself and religion.  We took part in several community activities as well as church involved activities. Which I really enjoyed doing as well. I also served on the board 1 year. I still have a few friends that I keep in touch  with  from there as well. Really enjoyed the
music groups.
My parents moved to Carlsbad, N.M. in 89' (I think) I moved out there for a very short time. Didn't like it.  Fortunatly I was able to move back 1990 (I think) and get my Activities job back with the hospital. Stayed active again with the Newman Center(Like I never left; almost). Met Pat while being active in the Newman Center; he Graduated in 1988 with his Masters in Chemical Engineering.  Never really dated but stayed friends; Never thougt a long distance friendship would ever work.  I guessed wrong! We got married in May of '92. Wow!! I guess you might say I have a MRS.. Degree.  Ha! Ha! Patrick started working with Texaco R&D in Port Arthur Tx.  Texaco went downhill and then we moved here to the Spring/Woodlands(25miles N. of Houston). area in Sept. of 1998.  WoW!!  Talk about Shopper's Paradise!!!  It just keeps growing and growing.  This is where the "Shell Houston Open' is played (for you golf fans).  I volunteered one year. I had a good time. I saw a few of the Pros.  "Fred Couples" and I walked to the Pro shop side by side.  NOT PLANNED!! I thought that was pretty cool !!!  He placed 3rd. Not very happy!
We usually make it to Missouri about twice a year. Pat's parents are from Monett, Mo.  I usually try and go to Rolla as well and visit some friends and family as well. Believe it or not!  I miss Missouri!!  I guess "Home Is Where the Heart Is" . I plan on coming to the reunion. Hope to see a few familiar faces! As I said before I like keeping up with old friends and making new ones. Hope to hear  from a few of you!!!!

Running with Jon, Jeff and Glen from the class of "81", Chief of Police told me one day that wherever he saw the 4 of us he knew there was a fifth close by. Thinking we were invincable. Gatherings at Lane Springs, Mill Creek, Pink Bridge, or any other place we happened to run into friends. 30 Hushpuppies at Long John Silvers for $2.00, great weapons for those occassions when you ran out of bottle rockets. Thinking 40 was old. Willie Schriener and his chainsaw scarring the #&@* out of everyone during THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE at the drive in. Sneaking into the Motel Swimming Pools, Knowing every gravel road in the country by heart. Fast Women and clean cars, or maybe it was Clean Women and Fast cars Don't really recall. Traveling to St James just to start trouble, Being a "Kingshighway Bum", And all the other stuff that made Rolla a great place to live......
What have you been up to since high school?:
After graduation I spent most of my time working and looking for my next opportunity to fame and fortune. I got married in Summer of 1984 and settled down a little.

In 1990 I took a job with Missouri Cellular, a local privately owned Cellular provider. We were the 1st Rural Cellular provider in the state of Missouri. After several months in the Rolla office I was promoted to Sales and marketing director for the Rolla and Columbia Mo facilities. In the early months of 1993 CyberTel Cellular out of St Louis purchased our 2 markets and I became the Western Regional Area Director of Operations. I worked most of my time in the Columbia area but still continued to reside in Rolla. (Lived in the Columbia Drury Inn)

Ameritech (another name change took place and with it several upper management people) came along in the 3rd qtr of 1993 and decided to move all operations and myself to Columbia Mo. By This time I had pretty much had my fill of the Corporate Butt Kissing Procedures and thought I needed to stay in Rolla, I made an offer to purchase the Franchise and we came to an agreeement in Dec 1993.

I divorced in 1994 and Remarried my current wife in July 1995, We have 1 child from her previous marriage and 1 together. Other than work and Family my time is filled with activities and Volunteer work around the community. I have served on the Board of Directors for the ROLLA LIONS CLUB, PAST LIONS CLUB CARNIVAL CHAIRMAN (1995), I have served 4 years on the Board of Directors at Oak Meadow Country Club, I am Currently starting my second 3 yr stint with The ROLLA RURAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION. There are many.  Playing football and wrestling, times with friends, many classroom experiences that at the time were not viewed as pleasant memories, but are now viewed as great opportunities to learn and associate with great people.  High School remains a bright spot in my past.
What have you been up to since high school?:
Since leaving Rolla High, I served as a missionary for my church for 18 months in Nevada and then pursued my education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  I received my B.S. there in Exercise Science and went on for a Master of Science degree from BYU in Exercise Physiology.  While in college, I met Deena Anderson from Lake Arrowhead, California.  We dated for a while and were married in August of 1986.  We now have four children who are smart and athletic.  (In my humble opinion)  Upon completing school, we moved to Florence  Oregon which is right on the beautiful coast.  We started a small fitness center (867 square feet) and hoped for the best.  Now, ten years later, we still live in Florence, have a fitness center that is 10,400 square feet and are doing well.  We are active in our community and church and enjoy life.  If ever you are driving the Oregon Coast, please stop by and visit.  I would love to see anyone from Rolla.

Occupation:

Hobbies/Interests:
Being "Daddy", piddling on our 30 acres, landscaping/gardening, coaching youth sports, watching the RAMS, lifting in the basement, and pretending "father knows best"
Favorite high school memories:
Asking Mrs. Christianson to help me find the National Enquirer in the library.  Liberating my dog and others from the pound with a few nameless friends. Going to the Homecoming dance as sophomores and finally getting up the courage, as a group, to venture on to the floor and dance. Beating the JC Jays twice.  Being the first of my friends to get a license and after school cramming six or seven in car made for four or five.  The food fight at Simmons' before our Senior Prom.  The casual get togethers at Franz's barn to discuss current events.  Wrestling on the drama trip bus until the windows were too fogged for John W. to see to drive.  Trying to be the "responsible one" but still breaking a door window in the Annex.  Being lucky enough to be part of athletic teams made up of friends who would do anything for one another, who always believed we could beat anybody, and did whatever necessary to help the team succeed.
What have you been up to since high school?:
After high school I went straight through at the University of Missouri to get my Masters in Education and Counseling Psychology in 1987.  I was offered a job in Rolla as a therapist in an inpatient treatment facility for both psychiatric and chemical dependency problems.  I became the Program Director in 1989 and also became a Licensed Professional Counselor.
I finally got well enough to leave there and was offered a position to direct a local initiative to develop both school and community based programs for at risk kids and families.  The Project was funded by the University of Missouri, but I was actually a Rolla School employee.  This is where I found the work I really enjoy.
This also gave me a great opportunity to coach.  I coached 8th grade football for seven years and 8th grade girls basketball for three years.  Both were great fun and rewarding.  I hope to coach again someday after my kids are grown.
During this time, I was also part of a founding group that started Rolla Youth Football, which is a tackle league for 5th, 6th, and 7th graders.
Laurie Herrman and I married in 1988.  She's been teaching art since and is currently teaching all the 5th and 6th graders at Rolla Middle School.  Our three kids keep us on our toes.  Sometimes I think we are a tag team trying to keep up with everything.  We manage to have some fun and get to the beach once a year.
In 1993, with the help of a few friends, including our class' own John K. Meusch, we started a new not-for-profit agency, Prevention Consultants of Missouri, which I direct.  Our agency contracts with the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Rolla Area United Way, Children's Trust Fund, and other entities to provide a variety of services.  Much of our work is in substance abuse prevention, child abuse prevention, and school based counseling services.  We also do a lot of work with area schools in professional development and training with students.  It's good work and work worthwhile.
I have also completed my course work and testing for my doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, but I still have much to do on my dissertation to finish my degree.
I also worked as campaign manager for Bob May, you may remember his son Pat who was in the class of '79, who ran for State Representative in 1998.  Bob worked very hard.  We lost by only 28 votes, from over a total of 10,000, to a 24-year incumbent.  We ran again in 2000.  The incumbent did not.  Bob won and he is currently our State Rep in Jefferson City.  It was an interesting experience.

Rolla is still a great place to live, work, raise a family, and go to school.  Many of you have made your home elsewhere, but always know, you will be welcome back in your home town.  I hope to see you in August.
