Name: Michael Van Dpren
Spouse Name: Kristi
City: Springfield
State: Mo
Children & ages: Paul Ashley-11, John Daniel Wayne-2
Occupation: Medical Technologist
Hobbies/Interests: Astronomy, Drumming, Fly fishing/Fly tying
Favorite high school memories:
Specifically school
related- I'd have to say the various band trips and performances (getting a
1 at state in percussion ensem. was quite an experience- as well as the
field judge I hit while in one of the marching competitions)
As for memories during that time in my life, well nothing really has changed
there as far as what I like to do- get outdoors with family and friends and
enjoy Gods creation.
What have you been up to since high school?:
I took the scenic tour through college, met Kristi (as she recalls) Aug.
27th 1987. We married on June 11th (now that one I really do get every
year) 1988. I graduated that same year with a degree from SMSU in secondary
education, promptly moved to K.C. where for a year I did anything but
Teach. Finally landed that first job at a private Christian School where I
was the Science Department (small school). Kristi was working all this time
in K.C. as a computer trouble shooter for the TWA Travel Agency computer
system- PARS.
We moved to the thriving metropolis of Otterville Mo. (yes named after the
animal- Mo. Cons. Dept. actually enacted a program at one time to introduce
the species there near the Lamine River system). I taught there for 5 years
(small public school = Sci. Dept. again!!) then decided to go back to school
to get my certification as a Lab professional. Notice in all this time only
about 1 year, total, was spent with me actually not in classes in some
manner or other.
We had Paul in Dec. of 90. In 95 we moved back to Springfield where Kristi
and I first met, she has been working with the school system, church, and at
a rubber stamp hobby store, while I continued in, yep, further schooling and
for the last several years working for the Cox Health Systems as a Med.
Tech. I still can't get out of the classroom hovever as I love to spend time
in classes (usually Paul's) teaching kids about astronomy- just a little
challenging in the daytime.
We had John then in Dec. of 99. With Kristi's BD in Dec. too, with Pauls and
Johns all before Christmas it gets a little interesting for the budget.
Words of wisdom:
NEVER EVER wake a
sleeping child.
ALWAYS consider a day fishing with no luck as God lavashing his grace upon
you. You could have spent that time at the job.

Occupation: Mother always, part-time fitness instructor
Hobbies/Interests: My children's activities have now become my
hobbies--I do work out daily. Currently our whole family is taking Spanish
lessons in our home from a family friend.
Favorite high school memories:
All the fun times with
marching band, symphonic band, cheerleading. Being Susan Konop's and Jenny
Sparlin's alibi when they went to the frat parties. Youth group at the
Methodist Church was wonderful. Does anyone remember Matt and Marta Knight?
What have you been up to since high school?:
I graduated from Culver-Stocktan College(a small Christian College in
Canton, MO) in 1985. At that time, I went back to Rolla to help take care
of my father who had open heart surgery. I met my husband, Pat, at
Godfather's Pizza. He was attending UMR and in his last year of his
Master's Program. I moved to Kansas City in December 1985 to work for the
state of Missouri. That was a great move because Susan Konop was in her
senior year at Rockhurst in K.C. and we we able to spend more time
together. Pat graduated from UMR in May 1986 and moved to K.C. to work for
TENEMEC. That fall we were engaged and married in August of 87. We moved
to Detroit in August of 88. Pat began to work for Saturn as a Materials
Development Engineer. He helped develop the process in which the engine
castings are made. Anyway, it was in Detroit that I began to teach aerobic
classes. We had our first child, Rose, in Detroit and then moved to
Nashville, TN when she was 4 months old. We bought a house in Franklin and
have lived here ever since. Pat still works for Saturn. However, he now is
the Environmental Engineer for their Powertrain Business Unit. I continue
to work in the fitness field. Currently, I teach spinning, step, boot camp
and weight training classes. All of them at 5:00 a.m. I also am a
Certification Specialist for the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America
(AFAA) based out of L.A. I travel at least one weekend a month and teach
the groug fitness certification course to future group fitness
instructors(the now politically correct name for aerobic instructor) This
is usually a much needed break from my normal day. Pat and I made the
decision to homeschool our children about 6 years ago. Homeschooling has
many challenges, however, the rewards of homeschooling far surpass the
challenges. We plan to continue homeschooling through High School. Besides
teaching classes, homeschooling the children, I am also very busy with all
their activities. They all swim for the Nashville Aquatic Club. Daily
practice

Occupation:
Hobbies/Interests: reading, gourmet cooking, gardening, traveling,
playing with Jake
Favorite high school memories:
Marching band
everything--Music Bowls, Thursday night practice, color guard, Whitewater
and Chicago, color guard camp in the summer, performing at football games
then sitting in the stands and doing our cheers, working really really hard
with talented people. We were so young! And we were so GOOD! Mr. Priest's
trig and physics classes, debate tournaments, playing the maid sophomore
year in "Life With Father" (my unrequited theatrical streak was tapped in
that role), and my inspirations: Sally Adams, Pat Wolford, Don Priest, Bob
Drummond. Mornings getting homework done in the cafeteria (thank you Maria
Grant for getting me through trig), feeling like a princess in Junior Miss
(that green dress--what was I THINKING?!). My gorgeous best friend Dana Bourquin. What a pal. Maria G., Bart E., Doyle E., Ann G., Mary S., Amy
Jo, Renee en francais, Holly M. (we were the best camp counselors ever).
Our trip to Gulf Shores after graduation with Amy Jo, Mary and Dana and
looking out the last morning after a particularly eventful week to see BOB
BALLENGER walk out of his hotel room to say howdy.
What have you been up to since high school?:
I graduated from William Woods College in 1985 with a degree in Romance
Languages. Yeah, so what do you do with that? I promptly went to Mizzou
and got certified to teach French and Spanish, then went to St. Louis to
teach middle school Spanish for 5 years. I also assistant coached a girls'
track team (yup, you heard right) and coached cheerleaders for a couple
years. Traveled to France to study, then to Spain where I met my first
husband, whom some of you met at our 10-year reunion. I moved to San
Francisco (great move, bad marriage), got a MA in English, taught ESL for UC
Berkeley Extension, got divorced.
My beautiful dad fought a great,
long battle with cancer and died in September of 1996. I still miss him
every day. I won't forget a very pregnant Dana Bourquin driving in to Rolla
for his funeral, and Doyle Edwards coming from an open house at school to
the visitation.
I met my husband Peter in 1997 and we were married in our living room in
June of 1999. I left teaching briefly to join the magical world of Web
consulting doing writing and usablity testing for Web sites. My company bit
the dust just before Jake arrived. Perfect timing I'd say! We live in the
Oakland hills and our beautiful boy, Jacob, was born on April 22 last year.
He's the true love of our lives and we can't imagine feeling more blessed.
I'm so lucky to have the chance to stay home with him. "Grammy" Van Matre
visits every chance she gets.
Words of wisdom:
Stop what you are doing
right now and tell someone you love them.

In the past year I feel
fortunate to have gotten back in touch with Renee Eichorn Dash via email,
and with Jim Kelsey, whose wife I ended up in a new moms' group with. Too
cool. Thank you, thank you Martha for all your hard work on the reunion,
and Ken, this site is awesome. I loved reading about everyone who has
posted their info--Ann Graber had QUADRUPLETS!!!! And Amy Jo, you are a
BABE.

What have you been up to since high school?:
After graduation from High School, I went to SMSU. After changing my major
5 times I finally graduated with a major in Biology with a certificate to
teach in Dec 1987. After considering teaching at a school where I would
have to be concerned with students carrying weapons or myself carrying a
pistol for protection, I decided to go into the Marine Corps :-).
I received opportunities to see much of the world, stationed in Okinawa,
Japan twice, therefore Korea twice, went to Norway for a training exercise
and was able to travel Europe with a friend. I was also able to meet with
my Mom in Australia. (We live on a very beautiful planet with some very
interesting people!) During my tours of duty I was also able to play
softball and was on the All-Marine Softball team for two years and on my
third year was involved in a near fatal traffic accident. After a year of
therapy the Marine Corps decided to medically retire me and I left the
wonderful world of being a Captain in Dec 1995.
During my last year in the service, I married a handsome man named John
Illes. We had a 30’s theme wedding where most attendee’s dressed the part
as well as the bridal party. The guys wore suits, hats and Tommy guns
(plastic, of course!!) and the girls wore flapper dresses, feathers in their
hair, and carried daringers (not real either) in their garters over their
net pantyhose. Everyone looked great. The band played 30’s music – which
is good music! After the ceremony we were driven around Virginia Beach in a
1932 Model A Ford and 1929 Model A Ford Woody. We married May 6, 1995
After a two year visit in South Carolina to reacquaint John to his parents
(he is a former Marine too), we moved west to Phoenix, Arizona in Jan 1998.
In Mar 2001, I got a position with the Phoenix Police Department as a Crime
Scene Response Technician. Very interesting work.
Words of wisdom:
God is with you, let Him
bless you indeed!!
Anything else significant you would like to share:
It is wonderful to see
how everyone is doing and that everyone who sent photos looks real good.
Thank you Martha and Ken for putting so much work into this. It is greatly
appreciated.
